U.S. team excels in singles at Tournament of the Americas

ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States took nine out of 10 gold medals in singles Tuesday to kick off the 52nd Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Sunrise, Fla.
In the two-day singles competition, participants bowled six games each day at Strikers Lanes. The 20-member USA delegation, which includes two Team USA, two Junior Team USA and four U15 development team members, came away with nearly all the singles gold medals.
Team USA's Rob Gotchall took the Adult Men's title with a 12-game total of 2,538, while teammate AJ Johnson finished fifth with 2,393.
Mexico's Aseret Zetter was the lone non-U.S. player to win a gold medal as she captured the top spot in the Adult Women's division with 2,410. Team USA's Brittni Hamilton earned the silver medal with 2,340, while Holly Harris finished fourth and missed a medal by one pin with 2,329.
Junior Team USA's Andrew Anderson claimed the Junior A (ages 16-19) Men's gold medal for the second consecutive year with a 2,350 total, while teammate Ronnie Fujita took the bronze with 2,206. In the Junior A Women's division, Breanna Clemmer earned the gold by more than 200 pins with 2,395 and teammate Julia Bond claimed the bronze with 2,166.
In Junior B (ages 12-15) competition, Ashley Channell topped the women's field to bring home a gold medal with 2,133, while Leah Glazer finished fifth with 1,914. Sean Wilcox (2,355) and Cortez Schenck (2,287) finished first and second the men's division to take the gold and silver.
In the Senior Women (age 45-plus) division, Tish Johnson took the gold medal with 2,374, while Rick Steelsmith claimed the Senior Men (ages 50-plus) title with 2,550.
Carol Teel came away with the gold in the Super Senior Women (age 55-plus) division with 2,298, and Sam Carter won the Super Senior Men (age 60-plus) with 2,429.
The doubles competition will take place on Wednesday.
The Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas, the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone, is a week-long invitational competition for countries in the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON), the American Zone of the World Tenpin Bowling Association.
In each division, one team comprised of two men and two women compete in singles, doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team. After 34 games, individual all-events and national all-events champions are recognized.
