Kulick, Parkin win doubles with record score at PABCON

CALI, Colombia - Another record was broken Sunday at the 2014 Pan American Bowling Confederation Women's Championships as Team USA's Missy Parkin and Kelly Kulick shot 2,861 to win the doubles gold medal.
Parkin put together a six-game total of 1,498, while Kulick added 1,363, as the pair rolled to the title at the Cali Bowling Coliseum. Aruba's Kamilah Dammers and Thashaina Seraus won the silver, while Team USA's Shannon O'Keefe and Danielle McEwan took the bronze.
It was a stellar day for Parkin as she had games of 217, 296, 247, 225, 279 and 234 to average 249.67. Kulick fired games of 222, 258, 193, 204, 251 and 235 on the 47-foot Paris pattern.
"I thought I might have some issues on the long pattern, so I'm really happy with how we both performed," said Parkin, who helped the pair break the record of 2,780 set by Kulick and Shannon Pluhowsky in 2010. "I was excited to bowl doubles again with Kelly because last time we bowled together at the World Championships in doubles we got silver. This time we got the gold."
Aruba set the score to beat on the first squad Sunday only to see Parkin and Kulick blast past it. The Arubans totaled 2,754 with Dammers shooting 1,461 and Seraus adding 1,293. It's the first medal in PABCON Women's Championships history for the island nation.
O'Keefe totaled 1,399, while McEwan shot 1,280 to earn the bronze medal with 2,679. The third Team USA doubles pair of Shannon Pluhowsky and Liz Johnson finished seventh with 2,559.
Team USA occupies the top three spots in the all-events standings after 12 of 24 games. Parkin leads with 2,838, Kulick is second at 2,750 and Johnson is third at 2,748. The top eight players in all-events will advance to Wednesday's Masters match play.
Four countries will qualify for the 2015 Pan American Games this week as part of the PABCON Women's Championships. The combined all-events total of the top two bowlers from each non-qualified country will determine the top four that advance.
Eight countries have already qualified for the Pan American Games, which will feature 14 countries. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Venezuela have already secured spots.
There are seven countries competing in the PABCON Women's Championships that have yet to qualify and four will earn spots. Those countries are Aruba, the Bahamas, the United States, Guatemala, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
With Parkin and Kulick leading the all-events race, the United States is at the top of the rankings and in prime position to qualify for the Pan American Games halfway through the event.
The competition moves to the trios event, which will be contested starting at 10 a.m. Eastern on Monday. All rounds of the PABCON Women's Championships are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.
