EL PASO, Texas - After watching their friends get recognized as the defending Classified Team and Classified Doubles champions at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, the members of Scotty's 3 of Alexandria, Minnesota, took their turn in the spotlight Wednesday night.

The group put together games of 849, 922 and 905 at the El Paso Convention Center and moved into the top spot in the 2015 Classified Team event with a 2,676 total, holding off their companion team, Scotty's 4, which settled into second place with 2,646. Rails Bar and Grill of Eagle Grove, Iowa, previously held the lead with 2,597.

Coming into this year's event, the game plan for the Scotty's crew was simple - get the ball down the lane cleanly, and they'd have a chance to score well with consistency and good spare shooting. If they did that and kept each other focused, especially if someone had an open frame, a few well-timed strikes would leave them in good position.

"We knew it could be done if we covered the spares and kept the ball speed up," Brady Erdmann said. "As long as we covered the spares, the strikes were extra."

That approach proved to be successful as the four-team group relied on years of competition together and familiarity with each other's games. They know one another's strengths and weaknesses, and that was another main component in how they put their teams together.

Each team includes a mix of seasoned bowlers and less-experienced competitors, with a focus also on future success.

As Scotty's 3 became aware that it was in contention to take the lead, the excitement grew and the teammates reminded each other to keep their heads up and stay positive.

Tyler Grabow led the charge with a 587 series and was followed by Marshal Lagred (586), Brady Erdmann (539), Jed Lyle (509) and Alan Iverson (455).

On the next pair of lanes, Scotty's 1 also made a run at the top of the leaderboard before landing in seventh place with a 2,527 total.

Last year, with a different mix of the players, Scotty's 1 claimed the Classified Team title with a 2,843 effort. Paul Beyer of Benson, Minnesota, and Chad Razink of Clontarf, Minnesota, took home the Classified Doubles crown with a 1,222 total.

In order to be eligible for the Classified Division, teams must have a combined entering average of 900 or less. Classified Doubles teams must be 360 or less, and individuals in the Classified Division have entering averages of 180 or below.
