USBC Convention concludes

OMAHA, Nebraska – In addition to electing three board members Thursday, delegates rejected legislative proposals requiring the merger of non-merged state and local associations during the final day of the 2015 United States Bowling Congress Convention and Annual Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska.
The 761 voting delegates (723 association delegates, 14 athletes and 24 board members) voted on eight proposals involving changes to USBC bylaws, league rules and tournament rules during the legislative session. USBC bylaws proposals required a two-thirds vote to pass, while league rules and tournament rules required a majority vote.
Delegates rejected two amendments to USBC National Bylaws requiring non-merged local and non-merged state associations to be merged. They also rejected a proposal to change the national dues maximum from $10 to $8, two amendments to League Rules and one amendment to Tournament Rules.
Two legislative proposals were accepted – allowing Youth state delegates to vote on adult dues and the adult directors on the board, and allowing Youth local representatives to vote on adult dues, adult directors on the board and adult delegates/alternates for the state meeting. The USBC Board previously approved two legislative proposals allowing everyone on the local and state level to vote on youth-related items. The actions by the delegates and Board allow everyone to vote on all issues.
Elections to the USBC national board also took place Thursday. Current board members Karen Jost of Olympia, Washington, and Steve O’Brien of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, were elected along with Jay Daryman of York, Pennsylvania.
Jost (453 votes) and O’Brien (433) received a majority on the first ballot to earn election. On the first ballot, the other candidates received the following votes: Daryman (342), Lynda Isaacs (257) of Richmond, Indiana, Jeff Ussery (322), of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and David Fields (230) of Houston. Because he had the lowest vote total, Fields was removed for the second ballot.
The vote totals on the second ballot were: Daryman 259, Ussery 243 and Isaacs 190. Because there was not a majority, Daryman and Ussery moved to a third ballot while Isaacs was removed. Daryman received 350 votes to earn election, while Ussery received 345 votes on the third ballot.
Five of the six candidates up for election were slated by the USBC Nominating Committee, while Fields ran from the floor. The three elected Thursday will begin three-year terms starting Aug. 1.
Dan Patterson of Buffalo, New York, recently was re-elected to a second term on the USBC Board as an athlete representative. Athletes who have been Team USA members in the past 10 years were eligible to vote to determine the athlete representative to the board.
USBC also showed its support of charitable causes during Convention week with Bowl for the Cure® and Bowlers To Veterans Link (BVL) presentations.
BVL, founded in 1942, is the sport’s oldest charity and has raised more than $45 million for America’s active-duty service members and veterans. BVL announced it made a total donation of $945,000 to the Department of Veterans Affairs for the 2013-2014 season.
BVL also honored the top state and local associations for their contributions. The top state association contributors were: California, $127,482.75; Virginia, $50,542.43; and Texas, $41,348.50. The top local associations were: Nation’s Capital Area (Va.) USBC, $27,465.00; Citrus Belt (Calif.) USBC, $18,938.00; and Greater Denver (Colo.) USBC, $15,158.95.
