RENO, Nev. - When AJ's Jokers of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, took to the lanes at the 2015 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships on Thursday, they were hoping to have some casual fun. Upon leaving, they found themselves in unfamiliar and unexpected territory.

After putting together games of 612, 607 and 541 for a 1,760 total at the National Bowling Stadium, the team edged into the top spot in the Sapphire Division standings. Nebrask Inn of Clay Center, Nebraska, previously held the lead with 1,758.

"We had no idea we were going to take first place," said Danna Lemmert, a first-time participant at the USBC Women's Championships. "It still hasn't sunk in yet, I don't think."

Lemmert rolled a 453 series and was joined on the lanes by Helen Heritage (459), Jeanne Osborn (440) and fellow first-timer Sherry Pennock (408).

Even with their names atop the leaderboard, Lemmert and Pennock still found themselves in awe of being at the one-of-a-kind NBS.

"It was exciting to march down Center Aisle," said Pennock, who regularly bowls at Trojan Lanes in Troy, Montana. "It's different because it's so much bigger than were we bowl. We only have 10 lanes."

"You see it on TV, and you don't imagine being here," said Lemmert, a 43-year-old right hander. "People say, 'Oh, you're going to Nationals, you must be good.' I was here, and now, I can say that I was."

As they begin the wait until the conclusion of the Women's Championships on June 30, the team already is shifting its focus to the 2016 event being held at the new South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.

"It makes it more exciting to even go to next year's event," Pennock said. "And here I was saying I was sorry and wished I could have bowled better."

Also on Thursday, there were new team leaders in the Ruby Division.

Led by Rhonda Greenhalgh's 608 series, ABT from Taylorsville, Utah, posted games of 676, 701 and 775 for a 2,152 total. H&R Block from Maquoketa, Iowa, previously held the top spot with 2,069.

Greenhalgh was joined on the lanes by Serene Walters (537), Julie Mitchell (536) and Sue Joiner (471).

The Ruby Division is for teams with entering averages of 650-724, while the Sapphire Division is for teams with entering averages of 574 and below.
