HONG KONG - With two of three squads completed in the singles event at the 2011 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Women's Championships, Team USA's Shannon O'Keefe of Arlington, Texas, sits in fourth place.
O'Keefe totaled 1,441 for six games, an average of 240.17, on the first squad of qualifying Saturday at Hong Kong Bowling City. The top four players after all three squads will advance to Sunday afternoon's semifinals. All rounds are broadcast live on BOWL.com.
"I feel like it's a bonus to be in fourth because I thought I was going to drop out of the top four with the scores as high as they were the second squad," O'Keefe said. "I'm rooting for Kelly (Kulick) and Carolyn (Dorin-Ballard) all the way tomorrow. I don't care who from our team is in the top four as long as someone gets there."
After bowling well the first five games, O'Keefe struggled in the final game, shooting just 200 - her lowest of the block by 34 pins.
"I definitely think the transition gets tricky going into the last game," O'Keefe said. "If you don't anticipate what happens then your scores can drop. I feel like I just missed the transition a little bit the last game."
Korea's Sun Yun-Hee sits in first place with 1,496, an average of 249.33, while Malaysia's Jacqueline Sijore is second with 1,486. Denmark's Anja Ginge Jensen is third with 1,442.
As for the rest of the Team USA players who competed Saturday, Shannon Pluhowsky of Kettering, Ohio, is 15th with 1,376, while Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., is 16th with 1,372. Stefanie Nation of Grand Prairie, Texas, is 28th with 1,327.
Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, will compete on Sunday's third and final qualifying squad.
The 2011 World Women's Championships features 171 bowlers from 33 countries. The teams will compete in six disciplines - doubles, trios, team, singles, all-events and Masters.
