Boresch retains lead at Senior Dayton Classic

KETTERING, Ohio –
Trying for his second PBA Senior Tour title of the season, rookie Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wis., retained his lead after the second round of the PBA Senior Dayton Classic presented by Roto Grip Wednesday at Capri Lanes.

Boresch completed qualifying with a 3,869 16-game pinfall total to top the 32 players who advanced to match play beginning Thursday morning. In Wednesday’s second eight-game round Boresch had games of 268, 258, 245, 213, 195, 237, 236 and 213.

“Everything continued to match up well with the conditions today,” said Boresch. “I had the right ball and was pretty much able to throw the same shot for the first part of the block and then toward the end I just had to tweak my angle to the pocket and finished pretty well.”

Boresch won in his Senior Tour debut at the Senior Sun Bowl In The Villages in April but followed that up with a 46th-place finish in the Senior Mooresville Classic last week.

“You just have to come out here with an open mind, forget about last week and continue to make good shots like I have been the last two days,” said the 25-time PBA regional tournament titlist. “Based on what I’ve learned in qualifying I feel I’m as well-prepared as I can be for match play.”

Boresch holds a 16-pin lead over Sammy Ventura of Syracuse, N.Y., trying for his first Senior Tour title, in second with 3,853.

I’m learning something every year,” said Ventura who is in his third season on the Senior Tour. “I just need to keep moving forward and hopefully it will pay off with a win one day.”

Rounding out the top five are reigning Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, 3,852; Bo Goergen, Sanford, Mich., 3,829, and Senior Dayton Classic defending champion Hugh Miller of Seattle, 3,815.

The Senior Dayton Classic is being streamed live on pba.com’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame. For subscription information click on the Xtra Frame logo on the pba.com homepage.

Thursday’s match play rounds will determine the top four who will compete in the stepladder finals beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
