Players tied for Senior U.S. Open lead

BakerInsideLAS VEGAS – Former Professional Bowlers Association Tour player Joe Salvemini of Las Vegas, and third-year Senior Tour player Sammy Ventura of Syracuse, N.Y., finished with a 2,850 12-game pinfall total to tie for the second round lead in the Etonic PBA Senior U.S. Open Tuesday at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

Salvemini, the winner of three PBA Tour titles during a 20-year career from 1983 to 2003, had a 1,385 six-game pinfall with games of 245, 194, 211, 278, 246 and 211 in Tuesday’s second round to move into the lead improving on a fourth-place finish after Monday’s first round.

“When I was on, I was on but there were a few frames where I had trouble making the right adjustments and I had a little trouble with spares,” Salvemini said. “Overall, I haven’t felt this good in years so I’m looking forward to the next couple of rounds and hopefully I’ll be there for match play on Thursday.

“I’m a pretty emotional guy so I’m going to have to keep my emotions in check as we move forward,” Salvemini added. I have a good look now, I just need to stay focused.”

Adopting a less-is-more philosophy is paying dividends for Ventura. Once a bowler who relied heavily on a big hook, he is now learning that throwing the ball straighter is the key to better success on the Senior Tour.

Ventura had a 1,366 pinfall in the second round with games of 278, 213, 202, 239, 176 and 258.

TappInside“I made some radical changes to how I have my equipment drilled which is allowing me to get a cleaner release with not as much hook,” said Ventura, whose best Senior Tour finish was 10th in last season’s Senior Mark Roth Allentown Open. “I can still throw the big hook if I need to but learning to throw the ball straighter with a cleaner release allows the ball to read the lane better so that I can make better decisions on making adjustments.”

Salvemini and Ventura hold a 12-pin lead over Peter Knopp of Germany in third with 2,838, followed by three-time Tour and two-time Senior Tour winner Charlie Tapp of Kalamazoo, Mich., in fourth with 2,835, and PBA Hall of Famer and four-time Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker of King, N.C., in fifth with 2,824.

With the completion of the second round, the intensity ratchets up a level heading into Wednesday’s third qualifying round as players scramble to be among the top 55 who will advance to Thursday morning’s fourth round.

The top 24 players after Thursday’s qualifying round will advance to round-robin match play to be conducted Thursday and Friday to determine the top four for the stepladder finals scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
