Four players unbeaten at Senior Masters

LAS VEGAS - Four players made it through match play undefeated Thursday at the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters, while eight others still remain with one loss.
Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wis., Dave Axon of Bellevue, Neb., Kerry Painter, Henderson, Nev., and Robert Brown, Cody, Wyo., all survived four rounds unbeaten in the double-elimination match-play bracket at South Point Bowling Center and have the upper hand in qualifying for the stepladder finals.
Boresch, a USBC Hall of Famer, survived a tough battle with fellow Hall of Famer Pete Weber of Saint Ann., Mo., in his final three-game, total-pinfall match of the day, coming away with a 705-670 victory.
"Just to compete with Pete is a real honor," said Boresch, who at No. 6 is the highest seed remaining in the winners bracket. "I kept waiting for him to turn it on and when he did I was able to hang with him. Luckily, I had a big lead after the first game on him."
Boresch will take on Axon, while Painter will battle Brown in the next winners bracket round Friday morning. The winners of those matches are guaranteed either the first or second seed for the stepladder finals.
Eight players still remain in the elimination bracket, including Weber, who will take on another Hall of Famer, Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., in his first match Friday.
Also alive in the elimination bracket are Wayne Webb, Hugh Miller, Paul McCordic, Mark McCreary, Rod Tramp and Ron Mohr.
The final five players - two from the winners bracket and three from the elimination bracket - will make up the field for the stepladder finals, which will be broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV at 6 p.m. Eastern on Friday. The winner of the Senior Masters will take home the first-place prize of $16,000.
