SWAC Women's Bowling champion determined

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jackson State University encountered a slight detour on the way to its first Southwestern Athletic  Conference Women’s Bowling Championship title on Sunday.

Jackson State suffered its first loss of the double-elimination tournament in the championship round on Sunday but fought back to take down defending champion Prairie View A&M, 4-2, in the deciding best-of-seven match at the International Training and Research Center.

The Lady Tigers, the regular-season champion who earned the top seed on the opening day of the tournament, struggled in the championship match Sunday and Prairie View A&M took advantage to grab a quick 2-0 lead. While Jackson State was able to finally break through, Prairie View squeezed out a 211-210 victory in Game 4 before closing out the match, 4-1, to avenge its only loss of the tournament.

But to keep its title, Prairie View A&M would have to beat Jackson State one more time.

In the winner-take-all match, Jackson State was able to turn the table on Prairie View A&M and quickly jumped to a 3-0 lead. The Lady Panthers did fight back to take the next two games, but the Lady Tigers put together a 278 game to close out the match and claim the title.

Jackson State team members are Dyana Bakar, Laura Uzzell, Paola Estrada, Briana Reid, Kiara Smith, Marcela Sanchez, Alonna Tipton and Michelle Walker. The team is coached by Michael Boykins.

Sunday’s matches of the SWAC Women’s Bowling Championship will air April 3 at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.
