2018 Intercollegiate Singles Championships underway in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – A total of 16 men and 16 women remain on the path to an individual national title following the opening day of competition at the 2018 Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC).
Competition kicked off Tuesday at Sun Valley Lanes with 24 players in each division. All bowlers rolled six qualifying games to determine seeding for the single-elimination bracket, with the top eight qualifiers in each division receiving a bye for the first round of match play.
The first round of match play also was contested Tuesday, featuring three-game matches with total pinfall determining the winners.
Two additional rounds will take place Wednesday starting at 9:30 a.m. Eastern to determine the semifinalists in each division. They will return to Sun Valley Lanes on Saturday to bowl for the ISC titles, and CBS Sports Network will televise the semifinal and championship matches.
The women’s show will broadcast Tuesday, April 24 at 8 p.m. Eastern, and the men’s final will air Tuesday, May 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Nebraska’s Julia Bond tossed games of 245 and 255 to conclude her qualifying block and earn the top seed in the women’s bracket. Bond finished with a six-game total of 1,373 (228.33 average) to top all competitors and will face Concordia’s Makayla Lancioni in Round 2 Wednesday morning.
Robert Morris-Illinois’ Kenny Ryan held off Wichita State’s Wesley Low by five pins for the top seed after posting a 1,233 qualifying total. Ryan will take on Marian’s Jordan Shepard to start competition Wednesday.
Competitors earned their spots in the ISC field by qualifying through one of four sectional events held throughout the country in March.
