The Pikeville women and Webber International men outlasted their respective fields last weekend at the Brunswick Southern Collegiate Classic in Marietta, Georgia, the second Tier 1 event of the 2018-2019 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season.
The tournament was split between Bowlero Marietta for the women's competition and Brunswick Zone Austell for the men's field. A total of 21 women's varsity teams and 29 men's varsity teams bowled six traditional games and 24 Baker games with the winners in each division determined by total pinfall.
The Pikeville women were consistent through Saturday's traditional block, holding a slight edge over Indiana Tech heading into Baker competition. The Bears began to create some distance from the field in the back half of the Baker block and solidified their victory by finishing with games of 227 and 248 for a 9,992 total.
Webber finished second with 9,722, and Indiana Tech took third with 9,710.
Webber's Caitlyn Johnson, the reigning National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Most Valuable Player, took individual honors by finishing as the only player to average more than 200 for six games, posting a 1,206 total.
Sarah Doyle of University of the Cumberlands was second with 1,150 and was followed by Pikeville's Brittney Turcotte (1,149), Lindsey Wilson's Anna Etherington (1,135) and Pikeville's Emily Tull (1,125).
On the men's side, Webber had a slow start to its opening block Saturday but quickly chipped away and moved into third place by the sixth traditional game. The Warriors closely battled William Paterson for the top spot throughout Baker competition and surged into lead in the final game, rolling 219 to make up a 33-pin deficit to secure the victory with an 11,015 pinfall total.
William Paterson finished with 10,998, while Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah was third with 10,948.
Michael Mirabile of St. John's fired games of 290 and 233 to finish his six-game block and take the men's individual honors with a 1,357 total.
William Paterson's Andrew Dekowski finished second with 1,338, while Vincennes' Tyler Perry collected his second top-five finish at a Tier 1 event this season by taking third with 1,336. Indiana Tech's Cory Hersha (1,327) and Martin Methodist's Camden Gutshall (1,316) rounded out the top five.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Track Kat Klash in Houston, the McKendree women dropped the first game of the championship match against Nebraska but won the next four games to claim the title, 4-1.
- At the Virginia Union Invitational in Glen Allen, Virginia, the Fairleigh Dickinson women topped St. Francis-Pennsylvania in the title match, 4-1.
- At the Crusader Classic in Lynwood, Illinois, the Kentucky Wesleyan women rolled to a 4-2 victory over Lewis in the title tilt.
- At the AC Open in Lenawee, Michigan, the Toledo men and Bowling Green State women finished at the top of the standings.
- At the Titan Invite in Neenah, Wisconsin, the Robert Morris-Illinois women and men made runs through their respective brackets to claim wins.
- At the Jayhawk Collegiate Classic, the Wichita State men and women each won three matches in bracket play to record victories in Lawrence, Kansas, and Topeka, Kansas, respectively.
- At the Penn State Classic in State College, Pennsylvania, the Ursuline women and Rochester Tech men cruised to the top spots.
- At the Olivet Comet Classic in Charlotte, Michigan, the Olivet men snuck past Michigan-Dearborn for the title, while the Adrian women posted a big win.
