2020 U.S. Open set for Sun Valley Lanes in Nebraska

ARLINGTON, Texas – Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska, will be the host center for the 2020 U.S. Open, a major event on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour.
The 2020 event will kick off Feb. 16, with the stepladder finals televised live on FOX on Sunday, Feb. 23.
Earlier this year, the PBA, Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA) and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) announced a multi-year agreement to include the U.S. Open and USBC Masters on the Go Bowling! PBA Tour television package on FOX Sports.
With the stepladder finals of the U.S. Open scheduled on FOX from 2020 through 2022, the event, which had been contested in late October the last few seasons, will move to a February timeslot.
Sun Valley Lanes, a 32-lane center, was the host center of the 2018 Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships, the 2016 World Youth Championships and in 2019 will be a Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour stop for the fourth time since 2015, in addition to having hosted PBA regional events.
The center worked with the Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau and its local association, Lincoln USBC, to have the 2020 U.S. Open in Nebraska.
“We appreciate the opportunity to bring the U.S. Open to Lincoln,” Sun Valley Lanes owner John Losito said. “The bowling community has been supportive of the major events we have held at Sun Valley Lanes, and I’m sure we’ll deliver another outstanding tournament for the bowlers and the fans.”
The U.S. Open became a limited-field event in 2017 with competitors qualifying based on on-lane performances, such as leaders on the PBA Tour money or points list and top performers at USBC and international events. Bowlers also can earn spots through regional qualifiers and an on-site pre-tournament qualifier. Complete criteria can be found at BOWL.com/USOpen.
The U.S. Open includes 24 games of qualifying over three days to determine the 36 players who advance to the cashers’ round. After eight additional games, the field is cut to the top 24 players for round-robin match play, and the five finalists for the televised stepladder finals are determined by total pinfall, including bonus pins, for 56 games.
The U.S. Open is a collaborative effort of the BPAA and USBC. The 2019 U.S. Open will take place Oct. 23-30 at Victory Lanes in Charlotte, North Carolina.
