Big scores and a bunch of strikes highlighted victories for the Indiana Tech women and Concordia men over the weekend at the Bowling Green State Falcon Classic in Toledo, Ohio.
The single-day event featured 16 women's varsity teams and 15 men's teams. The format included four traditional games and 10 Baker games in each division, with total pinfall determining the winner.
The Indiana Tech women recorded a wire-to-wire victory at the Falcon Classic, creating some distance from the rest of the field after a 1,078 effort in Game 2 of the traditional block helped them build a 72-pin advantage heading into Baker competition.
The Warriors started the Baker block with 173, before posting nine consecutive games of at least 202 or higher to roll to the win with a 6,195 total. Lawrence Tech finished second with 5,937, and Lourdes was third with 5,832.
Bowling Green State's Britni Hosterman rolled games of 210, 239, 237 and 220 to earn the top spot in the women's individual standings, finishing with a 906 total, a 226.5 average. Adrienne Polonio of Lourdes was second with 860, and she was followed in the standings by Lawrence Tech's Alexandria Smigiel (857), Indiana Tech's Kayla Bivens (846) and Taylor McBride of Lourdes (842).
In the men's division, Concordia benefitted from back-to-back games of 1,159 and 1,148 in the middle of the traditional block to surge into the lead. The Cardinals maintained their advantage during the Baker block, taking the top spot with a 6,407 total.
Lawrence Tech finished second with 6,268, and Trine was third with 6,229.
Concordia's Korey Reichard started Saturday's traditional set with games of 279, 267 and 279 for an 825 series and finished the block with 229 to record a 1,054 total (263.5 average) to easily claim top honors in the men's individual standings.
Wright State's Andrew Bleakley placed second with 948, while Lawrence Tech's Michael Weber (940), Trine's Austin Robison (933) and Adrian's David Winters (922) also finished in the top five.
In other collegiate action:
- At the Mid-Winter Invite in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the Stephen F. Austin women toppled the most pins during Friday's traditional block, while Nebraska posted the top score during Saturday's Baker games.
- At the North Carolina A&T Vern Stallings Invitational in Greensboro, North Carolina, the North Carolina A&T women rolled to the top pinfall total during the traditional and Baker blocks.
- At the Jayhawk Collegiate Classic I in Topeka (men) and Lawrence (women), Kansas, the William Penn men and Newman girls finished at the top of the leaderboard.
- At the Jayhawk Collegiate Classic II in Topeka (men) and Lawrence (women), Kansas, the William Penn men completed the sweep, while Wichita State captured the second title in the women's division.
- At the Ohio Bowling Conference No. 4 in Columbus, Ohio, the Northwestern Ohio women and men swept the top spots.
- At the Ebonite Warhawk Open in Elk Grove Village (women) and Addison (men), Illinois, the St. Ambrose women finished strong to collect the win, while Calumet averaged more than 223 per game to claim the men's title.
