Spring Hill, Fla. –
Former member and past champion Jason Mahr of Spring Hill, Fla., defeated hall of famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., 259-234, to win the Professional Bowlers Association South Region Spring Hill Cheetah Championship at Spring Hill Lanes Sunday.

Mahr, who won his only PBA South Region title at Spring Hill Lanes on the very same day five years earlier, posted an 8-4 match play record to qualify second for the stepladder finals and nipped Lee Vanderhoef of Greenville, S.C., 213-212, to advance to the title match. He earned $2,500, but does not receive credit for a PBA title because he is a non-member.

Williams, who led the third of the PBA South Region’s four “animal pattern championship” events from qualifying through match play, earned $1,300. He also earned a paid entry into the PBA World Series of Bowling as the highest finisher in the optional “animal pattern” entry program.

In the first stepladder match, Vanderhoef defeated amateur Jeremy Mooney of West Palm Beach, Fla., 211-207. Vanderhoef earned $1,000 for third while Mooney earned $900 for fourth.

The South Region’s next tournament will be the Anderson Senior Open at Boulevard Lanes in Anderson, S.C. on July 27-29.
