Junior Gold bowlers tackle second round

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - The 2013 North Pointe Junior Gold Championships presented by Ebonite, Hammer, Track and Columbia 300 continued Tuesday as qualifying moved into Round 2.
Nick Kruml of Downers Grove, Ill., put together a second strong day to top the 20-and-under boys field with a 10-game total of 2,210 (221 average) after two rounds. Kruml shot 1,133 in the first round and followed it up with 1,077.
Tylor Greene of Davison, Mich., is second with 2,177, while Daniel Deno of Owensboro, Ky., is third with 2,174.
The U20 girls lead belongs to Lizabeth Kuhlkin of Rotterdam, N.Y., with 2,161 (216.1 average). Kuhlkin had a big second round with 1,137 to go along with an opening-round score of 1,024.
Dayna Mackie of Glendale Heights, Ill., sits in second place with 2,061, while Emily Eckhoff of Denver is third with 2,043.
In the U15 boys division, Cortez Schenck of Phoenix continued to bowl well and leads after two rounds with 2,153 (215.3 average). Schenck didn't have a game under 202 on Tuesday in putting together a second-round block of 1,110.
Brennan Haugh of Faribault, Minn., put together a big second-round total of 1,178 to move into second with 2,135 (213.5 average). Jerod Hromek of Towanda, Kan., who led after the first round, sits in third with 2,125.
Defending champion Breanna Clemmer of Clover, S.C., leads the U15 girls with 1,966 (196.6 average), while Kaci Collins of Charlotte, N.C., shot 1,026 on Tuesday to move into second place with 1,947. Kelsey Abrahamsen of Seattle is third with 1,928.
The cut positions to the next round were also announced Tuesday. The top 146 U20 boys, 81 U20 girls, 45 U15 boys and 24 U15 girls will advance after three rounds of qualifying.

A total of 2,078 of the nation's top youth bowlers are competing in the North Pointe Junior Gold at six bowling centers in the Detroit metro area.
The boys competition is being held at AMF Rose Bowl in Roseville and Sterling Lanes and Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights. The girls are competing at Astro Lanes in Madison Heights, 5 Star Lanes in Sterling Heights and Bowl One in Troy. The final two days for all competitors will be at Sunnybrook Lanes.
All bowlers bowl 15 games of qualifying over three days. One out of every seven bowlers will advance to the next round, where an additional five games will be bowled Thursday. After 20 games, as many as 64 bowlers in each division will advance to five final qualifying games Thursday evening before the field is cut to the top 16 in each division for the double-elimination match-play bracket on Friday.
Automatic Junior Team USA spots will be awarded to the top two boys and top two girls in the 20-and-under division after 25 games of qualifying. Additional automatic spots will be given to the winner and runner-up after bracket play in the 20-and-under division. If one or both of the finalists in the bracket already earned a spot through qualifying, the automatic spot becomes an at-large selection.
The National Selection Committee will select two boys and two girls from the match-play field, with all bowlers, including 15 and under, eligible for at-large selection. The final eight spots - four boys and four girls - on Junior Team USA will be determined at the USBC Team USA Trials in January.
