Magno takes all-events lead at 2024 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – Derek Magno of Cicero, New York, averaged more than 250 across nine games Thursday and Friday at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships to take the lead in Regular All-Events with a 2,255 total.

The 43-year-old right-hander became the first competitor at the 2024 tournament to record a 700 series in each event and posted scores of 779 in singles, 761 in doubles and 715 in team at the South Point Bowling Plaza to take over the top spot by 76 pins.

Kevin McCune of Munster, Indiana, and Collin Howe of Riverton, Illinois, previously shared the lead with 2,179.

Magno, a 2019 Team All-Events champion at the USBC Open Championships, also leaves his 20th tournament appearance in third place in Regular Team, Regular Singles and Team All-Events.

On Thursday, he helped Mento Produce of Baldwinsville, New York, to a 3,245 total, which included 290 from Magno in Game 3. In singles on Friday, he rolled 29 strikes on the way to games of 255, 269 and 255.

Mento Produce finished Team All-Events with a 9,855 total. The team also featured Brett Cunningham (1,966), Joseph Conti Jr. (1,890), Anthony Pepe (1,876) and Steve Meyer (1,868).

Conti, Pepe and Meyer, along with TJ Mento, joined Magno in the Team All-Events win in 2019, and Pepe also recorded victories in Regular Team and Team All-Events at the 2017 Open Championships.

Trip 4 Pro Shop of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, leads Regular Team (3,363) and Team All-Events (9,970) at the 2024 event, and Joe Barket of Morro Bay, California, holds the top spot in Regular Singles with 806.

Magno is no stranger to putting up big numbers at the Open Championships, and he has had some major performances in past visits to the Bowling Plaza.

On the way to victory in Team All-Events in 2019 with a 9,983 total, Magno also posted three sets above 700 to finish fifth in Regular All-Events (2,142) and Regular Doubles with Conti (1,404). He also fired a perfect game to close his team set.

In 2022, Magno connected for his second 300 at the Open Championships during singles to finish with an all-events tally of 2,111 to help Mento Produce break the Team All-Events record at the tournament with a 10,444 total. The record was broken again in 2022 by DiLaura Brothers 1 of Clinton Township, Michigan, with 10,585, and Mento Produce finished the year in third place.

The previous record had stood since 1996 by Pollard’s Bowl of Versailles, Indiana, with 10,425.

In 2024 at the Bowling Plaza, Magno started team with 192 before rattling off eight consecutive games of 233 or higher, including five games of 255 or more.

He posted a six-game score of 1,540 during doubles and singles Friday, averaging more than 256 for the day.

The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.
