Wisconsin team takes Standard lead at 2024 USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – It doesn’t get much better than bowling with family and friends at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, but taking the lead during your time on the lanes definitely can enhance the experience.

The members of Team Bel Aire Drive of Mequon, Wisconsin, were able to accomplish just that in Standard Team on Saturday at the 2024 event, using a strong final game to take the lead with a 2,848 total at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

After starting their appearance with games of 896 and 886, the group was able to bowl 1,066 in Game 3 to take over the lead by 50 pins. Sunoco Midwest Clean Fuel had led since March 25 with a 2,798 total.

The team lineup started with Randy Weber, who was able to finish with a set of 569. Next in the lineup was Samuel Weber, who led the team in the third game by bowling 263 for a total of 636. In the middle was Bryce Wentlandt, who had a total score of 375. In the fourth position was Steven Weber, who had a set score of 624. Lastly, in the anchor position was David Wentlandt, who had the highest series for the team with 644.

David Wentlandt, Randy Weber and Steven Weber have been friends for 45 years, and the bond that they had as kids is still the same now.

“We all grew up together – me, Randy and Steve. We are childhood best friends,” David Wentlandt said. “Steve’s son is Sam, and my son is Bryce, and we all just became a huge family.

“It is special, just super special to be able to come full circle.”

The team was part of a group of friends that all came to bowl from Wisconsin who were cheering them on as they were making their way toward the lead. They also had additional family and friends that were in the stands at the Bowling Plaza cheering loudly for them as well, making the moment even more special.

“That would be pretty awesome,” Samuel Weber said. “To be here and be able to bowl as well as we did, it’s not even about the prize money. I am here bowling with my family and bowling teammates."

This was Samuel Weber’s second year bowling the USBC Open Championships, but it was their first time all bowling together as one team. He also said, “To be able to hear just our names be called for the next subsequent years would just be a really cool feeling.”

The 2024 event marked David Wentlandt’s 25th year bowling the Open Championships, and he added, “You want to have a chance, and you want to walk out of here with an Eagle. Just doing our best is all that we can do, and that is all that we hope for. The special part is the family bond, and that’s really what it comes down to.”

From being friends for 40 years to becoming one big family was a special moment for this team. This was a moment that they never saw coming, with David Wentlandt stating, “This is Bel Aire.”

Standard Team features groups with combined entering averages of 776-875.

The 2024 Open Championships got underway Feb. 23 and will run through July 29 at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The tournament is scheduled to feature more than 11,000 teams and 55,000 bowlers making their way to compete in Las Vegas.
