The Urbana men and Wright State women led qualifying and went on to win the titles at the UNOC Racers Kickoff Classic at Westgate Lanes in Lima, Ohio, from Sept. 20-21 as the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season kicked off.
Urbana defeated Saginaw Valley State, 392-275, in the championship match to take the men's title after leading qualifying with a total of 9,366. Host UNOH finished second in qualifying with 9,225 but lost in the opening match of the finals to Saginaw Valley State in a roll-off, 10-5, after tying at 407.
Wright State's Brandon Weiker earned top individual honors with a six-game total of 1,369. Urbana's Kyle Cook (1,329) and Graham Fach (1,325) finished second and third, respectively.
On the women's side, Wright State took down Notre Dame-Ohio, 354-350, in the championship match. Wright State led qualifying with 8,655, while Notre Dame was second with 8,444. Notre Dame-Ohio took down host UNOH, 426-309, in the opening match of the finals.
Shannon Dewitt of Wright State fired a six-game total of 1,265 to earn the top spot in the women's individual standings. Wright State's Sarah Endres was second with 1,209, while Elizabeth Reed of Notre Dame-Ohio finished third with 1,179.
In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend:
- At the Southwestern Intercollegiate Bowling Conference #1 in Amarillo, Texas, Texas A&M rolled to the top spot in the men's and women's divisions.
- At the Green River Classic in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the Pikeville women and Lindenwood-Belleville came away with victories.
- At the Wisconsin Collegiate Bowling Conference #1 in Minneapolis, the Wisconsin-Whitewater men and Wisconsin-Milwaukee women picked up easy wins.
- At the Ball State Cardinal Classic in Munice, Indiana, the Wright State men and women pulled off the sweep to take the titles.
