High school championship helps open venue in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Raising Cane's River Center has been transformed into a 44-lane championship bowling venue, and its doors officially opened Friday as the Allstate Sugar Bowl/Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Bowling State Championship Tournament was held at the facility.
More than 100 student-athletes traveled to The Capital City from across Louisiana with the hope of winning a team or individual state title in boys and girls competition, while getting the additional bonus of participating in the one-of-a-kind championship atmosphere.
The high school bowling program in Louisiana continues to grow each year and includes more than 80 schools and 1,000 student-athletes this season.
Being able to have their season-ending event on the sport's biggest stage resonated with the young competitors, many of whom will be looking to further their educations while competing at colleges with United States Bowling Congress Collegiate and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) bowling programs.
"We couldn't be happier to have this amazing arena to conduct our state championship," said LHSAA tournament director Ricky Bourgeois. "I had one competitor tell me that a dream of his was bowl in a venue like this, and I believe every competitor and spectator was excited to experience this environment."
Vanderbilt Catholic and St. Scholastica captured the boys and girls team titles, respectively, Friday, and Vanderbilt Catholic's Paul Mazarac and Airline's Trista Quinley won individual titles.
The 2017 event marked the second time the LHSAA State Championship was held on custom-built lanes inside the River Center, and the third time high school competitors have had the opportunity to help the USBC break in the tournament venue.
The USBC Open Championships was held at the River Center in 2005 and 2012.
These student-athletes now will have the opportunity to witness the collegiate atmosphere first-hand as the NCAA Women's Bowling Championship and Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships visit the River Center, starting April 13.
The venue then will be home to the USBC Women's Championships from April 23-July 10.
