Finals set at Intercollegiate Team
April 20, 2012
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Webber International men will battle Wichita State, while Midland will take on the Webber International women for collegiate national titles Saturday at the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships.
The four teams emerged through the double-elimination match play bracket Friday at Sun Valley Lanes to reach the nationally televised finals. CBS Sports Network will air the women's championship match May 18 at 10 p.m. Eastern, while the men's final will be shown May 25 at 10 p.m. Eastern.
The Wichita State men made it through qualifying Thursday as the top seed and rolled through the best-of-seven Baker match play without losing a match. The Shockers defeated the top-ranked team in the country, Robert Morris-Illinois, in the semifinals, 4-2.
"We stayed on top of our moves and stayed in the present," said Wichita State senior Erik Gulbrandson, who bowled anchor for the Shockers. "It feels really good after finishing just short of making the finals last year."
In the other men's semifinal, Webber International was put to the test as Lindenwood forced a second semifinal match in the double-elimination format. The Lions defeated the Warriors, 4.5-1.5, in the first semifinal, but Webber International rebounded to take the deciding match, 4-3.
"I think the key for us was teamwork, because we work as a unit and we bowl together every shot," Webber International senior Marcelo Suartz said. "We went through a very hard time last year when we lost in the finals to Fresno State. This year, we are going to go into the TV show with a different mindset."
The Midland women entered the semifinals having to defeat previously unbeaten Lindenwood twice to advance to the title match, which is exactly what they did. Midland took down Lindenwood by identical scores of 4-2 in both semifinal matches.
"All of our family flew in and so it was a real boost to us to have their support," Midland senior Erin McCarthy said. "In the finals tomorrow, we have to stay focused on our game and not anybody else."
Webber International blasted into the championship match with a convincing 4-0 sweep of Stephen F. Austin. The Warriors made it through the bracket without losing a match.
"We filled frames and that was the key," Webber International women's coach Randy Stoughton said. "We did a good job of keeping the ball in play, and our girls worked really hard preparing themselves to fill frames."
A total of four television shows will be taped Saturday, with the men's and women's semifinals and finals of the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships also taking place. The women's singles show will air May 4 at 10 p.m. Eastern, while the men's singles show will air May 11 at 10 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network.
