International Senior Open concludes

LAS VEGAS - Kerry Painter of Henderson, Nev., maintained his torrid scoring pace at Red Rock Resort Casino Lanes as he averaged more than 257 to lead his team to a win at the International Senior Open on Friday.

Painter rolled a 298 game on the way to a 1,546 total for six games and lifted Team Painter to a 5,519 team effort, just 10 pins ahead of runner-up Team Meryman. Painter was joined by John Bertolina (1,419), Max Shellabarger (1,282) and David Chew (1,272).

Team Meryman included Ken Meryman (1,478), Bob Markiewicz (1,442), Vaughn Doody (1,370) and Howie Partell (1,219). Japan's Team Kikugawa finished third with 5,322, and Team Romeo, led by USBC Hall of Famers Robin Romeo and Lucy Sandelin, was fourth with 5,302.

Individually, it was Markiewicz who set the pace in Masters match play Saturday, rolling games of 279, 203, 236, 242 and 300 for a 1,260 scratch total. An additional 90 bonus pins for winning three of his five matches helped Markiewicz edge Painter for the men's 50-60 Masters title. Painter shot 1,237 and also won three matches, finishing with 1,327. Bertolina was third with 1,300.

Terry Leong of Henderson, Nev., topped the men's 61 and Older division, while former USBC Senior Queens champion Char Hammel of Las Vegas won the women's 56 and Older title. Romeo grabbed the final Masters crown, winning the women's 45-55 classification. Each Masters winner took home $500.

Bowlers from eight countries and six U.S. states competed in the week-long event, which was endorsed by USBC, World Tenpin Bowling Association and the Japan Bowling Congress.

Bowlers competed for medals and a total prize fund of more than $12,000 in singles, doubles, team and Masters competition on two different lane conditions.

Singles and doubles each were three games, with re-entries allowed. The team event featured four-player teams of any combination, with their six-game totals determining the winners. Re-entries also were allowed in team.

The top six players in each division advanced to Masters match play. Standings were based on 12-game totals.
