Nyitray receives USOC honor

ARLINGTON, Texas -
Michael Nyitray of Miami, a United States Bowling Congress Gold coach, has been named the 2012 United States Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year.

Nyitray was one of five people to receive 2012 USOC Coach of the Year honors. The winners were recognized at the USOC Coach of the Year Awards Reception, which took place June 21 as part of the 2013 National Coaching Conference in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He is the first two-time winner of the award, with the first coming in 2010.

"Being selected the 2012 U.S. Olympic Committee National Developmental Coach of the Year not only recognizes me, it also recognizes bowling," Nyitray said. "It shows how every sport within the USOC system, 47 in total, has an equal opportunity to be recognized."

National Governing Bodies selected their 2012 Coaches of the Year as part of the USOC Coach of the Year Recognition Program. The finalists in each category were chosen by a panel of coaching and sport education professionals.

The other coaches honored by the USOC:
* Doug Eng, Medford, Mass., tennis, Doc Counsilman Science Award
* Tom Franke, Plymouth, Minn., Paralympic swimming, Paralympic National Coach of the Year
* Adam Krikorian, Manhattan Beach, Calif., water polo, National Coach of the Year
* Don Showalter, Iowa City, Iowa, basketball, Volunteer Coach of the Year

"It is great to see Mike honored by the USOC for the second time in the last three years, considering the number of talented coaches nominated by each sport's governing body," Neil Stremmel, USBC Managing Director for National Governing Body, said. "He not only has developed some outstanding bowlers but his work to build high school programs in Florida has allowed more young athletes to compete in bowling."

Nyitray, who was named as the 2013 USBC Joyce Deitch Unity Award winner, continues to lead his athletes to success at every level. He was selected as a guest coach for the 2012 Tournament of the Americas, where Team USA captured 51 medals.

Additionally in 2012, athletes coached by Nyitray won titles at the World Youth Championships, Florida State USBC Tournament and Florida High School Athletic Association State Championships, where he saw three of his four bowlers advance to the top 16 - the best showing in Broward County history. In addition to managing the high school bowling teams in Broward County, he volunteers as the head coach for Coral Glades High School and four additional new high school programs. He also serves as a mentor to other coaches within the FHSAA bowling system, helping his peers develop their technical skills and league knowledge.

In addition to earning the 2013 USBC Joyce Deitch Unity Award, he was selected as the 2009 USBC Kerm Helmer Horizon Award winner and was named the 2008 USBC David Dahms Coach of the Year.
