Nebraska wins fourth Prairie View A&M Invitational

ARLINGTON, Texas - For the fourth consecutive year, it was the Nebraska Cornhuskers lifting the championship trophy at the Prairie View A&M Invitational, this time in an exciting come-from-behind win Sunday against Arkansas State.

The Huskers found themselves down 2-0 and 3-1 in the best-of-seven title match at the International Training and Research Center but rallied back with three convincing victories (211-177, 225-176 and 224-198) to top the Red Wolves, 4-3.

2016PVINebraskaForWeb465x262Nebraska, also the defending NCAA national champion, has won the Prairie View A&M Invitational in four of its five years, with Vanderbilt claiming the inaugural edition in 2012.

Vanderbilt again was in the mix in 2016 but fell to Arkansas State in the semifinals (4-2), before defeating top seed Stephen F. Austin, 4-2, for a third-place finish. The Huskers also downed Stephen F. Austin (4-2) to set up the meeting with Arkansas State, the top-ranked team in the country.

This weekend's event featured 10 of the top 25 teams in the most recent poll in a variety of exciting formats.

All 11 teams in the field bowled five five-game Baker matches Friday, five traditional matches Saturday and one additional team game Sunday, before being seeded into the three brackets based on their weekend pinfall totals.

Along with the Prairie View A&M Invitational trophy on the line, each match the teams bowled went toward their overall win-loss records for the 2015-16 bowling season, which helps determine the teams that qualify for the 2016 NCAA Bowling Championship being held in New Jersey in April.

Vanderbilt turned in the weekend's best record with a 10-2 mark, followed by Nebraska and Arkansas State at 9-3.

2016PVIAllTournamentForWeb250x140Individually, Vanderbilt's Robyn Renslow averaged more than 236 for six traditional games on the weekend's 38-foot oil pattern to take home most valuable player honors with a 1,419 total.

She was joined on the all-tournament team by the Arkansas State duo of Jordan Richard (1,365) and Stephanie Mims (1,338), Thashaina Seraus of Maryland Eastern Shore (1,330) and Nebraska's Julia Bond (1,320).

All rounds of the 2016 Prairie View A&M Invitational were broadcast live on BowlTV.
