Godman was one of the most prolific bowlers in USBC Open Championships competition during the 1970s. He thrilled the crowd at the 1974 tournament by unleashing 67 strikes and a 2,184 all-events total. He was the first man in Open Championships history to record three 700 series in one tournament. Godman's performance in the 1974 USBC Tournament resulted in his two championships, but he had success before that. He also rolled 11 consecutive 1,800 all-events totals from 1968-78 and shot a 299 game in Classic doubles in 1974. He reached another personal high in 1969 when he won the Tournament of Champions, a title he won again in 1973.
