Bowl for the Cure®: A Closer Look
Bowl for the Cure® is a year-round fundraising and breast cancer awareness initiative that is sponsored by USBC in partnership with Susan G. Komen®. Having started in 2000, Bowl for the Cure® has helped raise more than $10 million for breast cancer research and awareness in hopes of ending breast cancer forever.
February is Bowl for the Cure® Month and the kickoff to the “Your Roll to a Million” campaign. Learn more about what it means to be a part of this program and how to help a cause that affects more than 200,000 people every year.
Why was Bowl for the Cure® started? Who inspired it?
Bowl for the Cure® was started by the Women’s International Bowling Congress, spearhead by Sheila Nyren in the late 1990s and brought to existence in the early 2000s. Our goal always has been to bring people together through bowling to join the fight to end breast cancer forever.
Why did USBC partner with Susan G. Komen®?
Susan G. Komen® is the world’s largest grassroots organization of breast cancer survivors and activists. They also are known as one of the most trusted non-profit organizations in America, so it made sense for us to partner with them in 2000.
How did the campaign for “Your Roll to a Million” come about?
We’re aiming for a magical number that many strive to achieve – $1 million. USBC is working with Susan G. Komen® to make sure everyone knows they play a significant “roll” to ending breast cancer forever, whether it’s through online donations or merchandise purchases. However, what’s a better way to participate in the campaign than by going out and playing the greatest sport in the world!
How much money has been raised for breast cancer research and awareness?
Because of the work of thousands of people who love bowling and who put in the time and effort to support this great cause, Bowl for the Cure® has raised more than $10 million since its inception. Susan G. Komen® has raised almost $2 billion to fulfill their promise in ending breast cancer through research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs.
