Arkansas bowler tops Sapphire Singles at 2023 USBC Women’s Championships
June 07, 2023
LAS VEGAS – With less than a month left of the 2023 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships, bowlers from all over the nation still are making their way to Las Vegas with their striking shoes laced up for a chance at snagging one of the coveted gemstones awarded to the tournament champions.
For Cindy Schutte, her performance this week at the South Point Bowling Plaza helped her shoot to the top of the standings in Sapphire Singles.
Schutte, of Greenwood, Arkansas, bowled her heart out as she rose to the lead, rolling games of 235, 188 and 194 for a total of 617.
Karen Moore of O’Fallon, Missouri, had held the lead since May 8 with 607.
The feat itself meant a lot to Schutte, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury that has taken a lot away from her as a bowler.
“This is just absolutely incredible, and it’s been a long time coming,” Schutte said. “With my shoulder injury, to just have this all come together and to be able to bowl is amazing.”
Having a strong mindset was in the cards for Schutte as she came out of the gates striking at the Bowling Plaza. Averaging more than 205 for her set, she led off with a pair of impressive clean games.
Schutte needed a mark in the 10th frame of Game 3 to take her share of the lead, which she easily got with a perfect pocket strike on her first delivery. She added a spare to build the lead.
At the end of the day, Schutte can proudly see her name displayed at the top of the standings for Sapphire Singles, an accomplishment she has been waiting on for some time now.
“I’m shocked,” Schutte said. “I think it’s just a sense of accomplishment, and for those who have helped me along the way, it just feels really good.”
Sapphire Singles features bowlers with entering averages of 138-148.
The 2023 Women’s Championships started April 23 and will conclude July 2. The event will run for 71 consecutive days at the South Point Bowling Plaza and feature more than 4,200 four-player teams and nearly 17,000 bowlers.
