Georgia team takes Sapphire lead at 2024 USBC Women’s Championships
June 03, 2024
RENO, Nev. – It was a stellar day for the members of Hot Pockets at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships as they took over the lead in the Sapphire Division with a score of 1,857.
The team – featuring three bowlers from Georgia and one from Idaho – had games of 632, 610 and 615 to take the lead by four pins. The members of WHATEVER of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, had held the lead in Sapphire Team since May 10 with 1,853.
Two of the teammates – Mary Rushing and Linda McCart – are from Ellerslie, Georgia, while Kim Davidson is from Fortson, Georgia, and Samantha Canary is from Twin Falls, Idaho.
The team worked together to put up solid scores at the National Bowling Stadium. McCart led the way with a 570, Davidson had a series of 468, Rushing had 413 and Canary finished things out with a series of 406.
“This was such a surprise, out of the whim, because this is my second year and I told myself I have to come back,” said McCart after hearing the good news. “I was so overcome last year, I had to tell Mary to come back.”
Ending the first day of the tournament on a high note is news that every team wants to hear.
“It went well,” McCart said. “We all molded together, and the team worked well together. Samantha, a new bowler to the team, fit in well.”
The possibility of winning the tournament altogether is a moment that everyone wants to achieve at this tournament. Carrying that title with teammates you worked hard with is important to each player, just like having the trophy to share.
After finishing their team event by taking the lead, the teammates hope the score stays there for the rest of the tournament.
“I’m shaking,” McCart said. “My heart was beating hearing the news. I never thought that would happen. I was like wow! Hopefully the score stays, and we continue having a good time in Reno.”
Sapphire Team includes four-player groups with combined entering averages of 540 and below.
