LAS VEGAS – For competitors at the United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships, the days spent bowling often are filled with catching up with close friends.

For Jennifer Pelletier of Westbrook, Maine, and Susan Kelt of Cornish, Maine, their trip to the 2023 event at the South Point Bowling Plaza also served as a time to remember a close friend, and they were able to do something special to honor her as they took the lead in Topaz Doubles on Friday.

Pelletier led the charge with games of 171, 198 and 171 for a 540 series. Kelt added games of 120, 119 and 147 for a series of 386, giving the pair a total of 926.

Tammy Porterfield and Sheila Winslow of Kenesaw, Nebraska, previously led Topaz Doubles with 906.

“This means a lot,” Kelt said. “We worked hard to get here.”

This performance means more than just sitting on top of the leaderboard, however. Both went out there and put on a show for their friend, Shirley, who passed away this past year.

“I was using her ball,” said Pelletier while holding back tears. “So, she was here with us during the tournament.”

Kelt added in, “She would be so beyond happy to see this.”

Topaz Doubles features bowlers with combined entering averages of 249 and below.

The 2023 Women’s Championships started April 23 and will conclude July 2. The event will run for 71 consecutive days at the South Point Bowling Plaza and feature more than 4,200 four-player teams and nearly 17,000 bowlers.
