Maryland bowler looks to join father in winner’s circle at Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – The top performance in singles through the first two weeks of the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships belongs to Adriana Sheck of Frederick, Maryland.

The 27-year-old left-hander took over the top spot in Standard Singles on Friday with games of 265, 255 and 213 for a 733 series at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

Her performance also pushed her to the lead in Standard All-Events with 1,819. She had sets of 585 in doubles and 501 in team.

James Luneke of Dayton, Ohio, had led Standard Singles with 635, and Marcus Mosness of Clancy, Montana, was the previous leader in Standard All-Events with 1,761.

Sheck’s series also would be leading Regular Singles at the Bowling Plaza. Milwaukee’s Kyle Muth is holding the top spot at the 2024 USBC Open Championships with 717.

Regular Singles features bowlers with entering averages of 176 and above, while Standard Singles includes competitors with entering averages of 156-175.

Sheck’s father, Stuart Sheck, captured the first Standard Doubles title at the Open Championships in 2017, which also took place at the Bowling Plaza. Stuart Sheck had paired with Robert Tonelli of Henderson, Nevada, to record the victory with a 1,236 total.

Adriana and Stuart shared the lanes in doubles Friday, and he was the first to greet her with a hug after finishing her singles set.

“It’s always a special moment being able to bowl with my dad,” said Adriana Sheck, who made her sixth appearance at the Open Championships. “I started bowling when I was 4, and my dad has always coached me. I know that he loves bowling with me – I love bowling with him – and we work well together. Him being able to be there when I was shooting really well is very special for both of us.”
