New Mexico bowler takes lead in Emerald Singles at 2024 Women’s Championships
June 25, 2024
RENO, Nev. – The excitement continues during the final week at the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships as Lana Pesata of Dulce, New Mexico, strived to reach the top score and took the lead in Emerald Singles on Monday with a 656 series.
The New Mexico bowler saw her scores go higher and higher during her appearance at the National Bowling Stadium. Pesata started with scores of 492 in team and 548 in doubles before making her run to the lead in singles.
In singles, Pesata had scores of 192 in Game 1, 220 in Game 2 and 244 in Game 3 to pass the previous leading total of 649 held by Wanda Swindle of Shelbyville, Texas.
When she was asked about getting the news of taking the lead, Pesata said, “I am pretty excited. I bowled my highest game of 244. I am still very shocked overall, and happy with my scores.”
The mindset going into singles was crucial for Pesata, because it’s what helped her to the top of the standings in singles. The New Mexico bowler was just hoping to score well and achieve the strikes she was looking for in Reno. She delivered those strikes in the ninth frame and her first two shots in the 10th of Game 3, plus a nine count on her fill ball, to take the lead.
“All I kept thinking in my head was please get a strike,” said Pesata, who finished her 2024 appearance with a 1,696 all-events total. “I usually don’t do well in tournaments, so I was kind of doubting myself, but I’m just excited I did well.”
Monday’s performance was a huge success for Pesata, as it was also the highest series in her bowling career. She always tries to set a goal of at least getting a 600 series, and she was able to exceed her goal and achieve a new top series.
“My goal in league is to always get a 600 series, and I always try to get it,” Pesata said. “Now, seeing my scores today, I’m shocked.”
In singles, Pesata started to find her groove and put away any doubts that she had earlier. In addition, having great teammates around her helped to bring a little luck, along with their lucky team shirts.
“I was just really trying to beat my scores in the past, and just having the ladies around me for good company,” Pesata said. “This was my first time bowling with Faye (Swisher) in doubles, and she got us these shirts that we call our lucky shirts.”
Coming back from a short break after her leagues wrapped up, Pesata quickly fell back into rhythm.
“Our leagues ended back in April, so I haven’t really practiced much,” Pesata said. “I just came in thinking it’s like riding a bicycle, and I got out there and remembered the basics.”
Overall, Pesata had a successful run at the USBC Women’s Championships, from doing well to taking the lead. The New Mexico bowler hopes to achieve her next goal in reaching perfection on the lanes.
“My goal getting out there is to eventually get a 300,” Pesata said.
Emerald Singles includes bowlers with entering averages of 136-155.
