LAS VEGAS –
For a lot of bowlers, taking the trip to the Las Vegas for the United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships is about getting together with friends and having a good time in a new city.

The experience isn’t always tied to the final scores on the lanes at the South Point Bowling Plaza, but it’s always a bonus to bowl well on the national stage.

Carrie Germann and Tara Wagner of Bismarck, North Dakota, echoed that sentiment after taking the lead in Sapphire Doubles on Wednesday at the 2023 event with a 1,044 total.

“It’s really surprising,” said Germann, who made her fifth USBC Women’s Championships appearance. “We didn’t have any expectations coming in.”

They were consistent in their set, as Germann rolled games of 164, 182 and 177 for a 523 series, and Wagner, who was making her Women’s Championships debut, had 171, 176 and 174 for 521.

They narrowly took the lead by six pins over Christina Jordan of Yulee, Florida, and Siobhan Goguen of Jacksonville, Florida (1,038).

Germann and Wagner bowl in the same league back in Bismarck, but this was the first time they’ve been paired up for anything, and they made the most of it.

“Tara was a terrific partner today,” Germann said. “I’m so glad we got to bowl together.”

Sapphire Doubles includes bowlers with combined entering averages of 276-297.

The 2023 Women’s Championships started April 23 and will conclude July 2. The event will run for 71 consecutive days at the South Point Bowling Plaza and feature more than 4,200 four-player teams and nearly 17,000 bowlers.
