Texas bowler rolls to personal best, takes lead at 2023 Women’s Championships

LAS VEGAS – Every bowler remembers their first 200 game, but for Doris Mixon of Canton, Texas, this memory will mean so much more.

Competing in her first United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships at 77 years old, Mixon put up her personal best score, 234, in her first game of team Sunday at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

The big game would help Mixon reach another goal within her 20 years of bowling as she recorded her first 500 series (535).

Mixon took the momentum from her exciting performance Sunday to finish with the sets of 425 in singles and 405 in doubles Monday to set the pace in Topaz All-Events with a 1,365 total.

Her teammates were there with her every step of the way. The members of Backwoods Gals and all the fellow Texas teams at the Bowling Plaza erupted in chants of support of their teammate and friend, with huge grins across their faces.

“It meant everything,” said Mixon when asked about her big game Sunday. “I was so excited I could hardly sleep last night.”

Although the 2023 Women’s Championships just started this week and has more than two months of action-packed bowling ahead, Mixon was ecstatic to think about her name being at the top of the list in Topaz All-Events.

“Oh man,” Mixon said. “That would just be so awesome.”

The Topaz Division features bowlers with entering averages of 124 and below.

The 2023 Women’s Championships started April 23 and will conclude July 2. The event will run for 71 consecutive days at the South Point Bowling Plaza and feature more than 4,200 four-player teams and nearly 17,000 bowlers.
