LAS VEGAS - The first day of competition at the Collegiate Shoot-Out, a Tier 1 event in the 2018-2019 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate schedule, has concluded with the Webber International women and men leading in total pinfall.
The 2018 event is taking place at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, which welcomed 27 women's and 36 men's varsity programs. Wednesday's round featured six traditional games, and all teams will return Thursday to compete in 16 Baker games.
Total pinfall for the event will determine the points each team receives towards the Team Power Rankings. Placement in the Team Power Rankings will determine which teams compete in the postseason.
The team with the highest pinfall total in each division will receive the maximum amount of points at the conclusion of the event.
The Webber women led the way after rolling the highest team game in the women's division (1,067) during Wednesday's final game, finishing with 5,701. Wichita State sits in second place with 5,586, while Newman (5,537), Midland (5,528) and St. Francis-Illinois (5,443) round out the top five.
In the men's division, Webber rolled 1,093 in its final game to extend its lead, finishing Wednesday's round with a 6,174 total. Calumet is second with 6,084, and William Penn (6,041), Newman (5,945) and San Jose State (5,866) also are in the top five for total pinfall.
The Webber men are looking to sweep the top spots at both Tier 1 events this week in Las Vegas after pacing the field in pinfall at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational. The Warriors also won the bracket at the Glenn Carlson Invitational.
St. Francis-Illinois' Abby Ragsdale rolled 285 in her final game to claim the top spot in the women's individual standings, finishing with 1,268 for her six games. Baker's Megan Carpenter (1,239) was the only other player in the women's division to average over 200 for six games, while Grand Canyon's Emily Ornelas (1,191), Wichita State's Madison Janack (1,162) and Midland's Brittney Schnicke (1,155) all finished in the top five.
Webber's Matt Russo claimed his second individual title of the week after posting the top score in the men's field with a 1,422 total. San Jose State's Calvin Au was second with 1,348, and Nevada-Las Vegas' Dallas Leong (1,333), Calumet's Tyler James (1,327) and Wichita State's Jerod Hromek (1,296) finished near the top of the standings.
