Prairie View A&M wins 2019 SWAC Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas – Prairie View A&M went the distance to win their fourth Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Bowling Championship title Sunday at the International Training and Research Center.

The championship match was taped for broadcast on ESPNU and will air March 31 at 10:30 p.m. Eastern.

Prairie View A&M, which earned the No. 2 seed during the opening day of competition, entered the championship match needing to defeat top seed and undefeated Jackson State twice to win the title.

In the opening match, the Lady Panthers dropped Game 1, 154-145, before rattling off three consecutive victories. Jackson State countered with two straight wins of their own to force a seventh and final game, where Prairie View A&M put the match away with a 181-151 win.

In the winner-take-all match that followed, Prairie View A&M, the regular season SWAC conference champions, came out firing with three consecutive victories to set up a potential sweep in Game 4.

In the final frame of Game 4, the Lady Panthers left the door open after they were unable to secure a mark, which would’ve clinched the victory. Jackson State needed two strikes and seven pins in the final frame to force a Game 5, but a seven count on their first offering sealed the sweep for Prairie View.

The Prairie View A&M team members are Alexes Burton, who was named the event’s Most Valuable Bowler, Crystal Cline, Jada Davis, Shirley Kennebrew, Kayla Marsh, Sonja Ortiz, Ivelisse Reyes, Asia Wren and Sarah Young.
