Memorial Day message from Dennis Hacker

Fellow members of the USBC, families and friends,

The Memorial Day holiday traditionally marks the beginning of summer, and for many of us our bowling balls are traded in temporarily for golf clubs and fishing poles. But the holiday has a much deeper meaning, and as bowlers we have always held a very special relationship with and respect of the military. We can't let the holiday pass without appropriate reflection.

This weekend, we pause as a nation to remember those who gave their lives in the service of our country. Originally called "Decoration Day," the intent was always to remember servicemen and women who pay the ultimate price. One day a year was set aside to decorate the gravesites of fallen soldiers.

I'm grateful that I never had to experience a combat situation while serving 12 years in the United States Navy. As I think about it afterwards, however, even without facing imminent battle, being hundreds of feet below the surface of the ocean in a nuclear submarine was putting a lot on the line every day as well. I'd do it again, and I'll tell you on their behalf that those who gave their lives knew of the dangers when they chose to serve, and they would choose it again as well.

Memorial Day is a somber holiday for families of the fallen. For most of us, however, it's just a holiday. Be mindful that the reason we can have a family cookout, a weekend at the lake, bowl in a holiday tournament, or simply sit at home enjoying our freedoms is that all of it has been paid for with the lives of countless soldiers.

We can no longer say "thank you," but we can honor their service and sacrifice by living our lives.
