A Thanksgiving Tradition

You may know the name Rex Golobic because he is a past president of the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America.
But around the Northern California town of Daly City, Golobic is known not only as the long-time owner of Serra Bowl, but also for a charitable event that has become a Thanksgiving tradition.
Each year, Golobic and his staff work with Fathers Hoang Trinh and Tom West, two men deeply involved in helping people in need get enough to eat. That’s what the event at Serra Bowl is all about.
Charity Turkey Bowl XI to help strike out hunger will take place at Serra next Tuesday (Nov. 22). Here are excerpts from the press release that was issued for the event...

Join pro bowlers, celebrities, friars, kids of all ages, adults and seniors in rolling for strikes to win turkeys to help feed Bay Area families in need over the holidays. The event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Serra Bowl, 3301 Junipero Serra Blvd. in Daly City, across from the Colma BART station. The event is free and donations are accepted.
Serra Bowl will donate a turkey for all those who can throw a strike that day to St. Anthony Dining Room and the North Peninsula Food Pantry & Dining Center of Daly City. Watch pro bowlers do zany trick shots on the lanes, and bowl for strikes. Last year, over 1,000 turkeys were donated, and over the past ten years, tens of thousands of folks have had a holiday meal due to this volunteer effort.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., pro bowlers — joined by three incredible kid bowlers, from 10 years to 15 years old — will show off amazing trick shots.
According to Mike Leong, General Manager of Serra Bowl, “This is the eleventh year of Turkey Bowl, and our goal is to ‘strike’ out hunger for all those in need during the holidays. Bay Area bowlers, celebrities, local school kids and the community come out on the lanes to score turkeys for those who would otherwise go hungry. This event is legendary, and a true Bay Area tradition.”
The pros will roll strikes with obstacles such as chairs on the lane, with fans sitting on the chairs while the ball thunders under them... knock down a wall of pins mid-lane... strike 30 pins down... perform under-leg bowling shots... and other new and extremely challenging trick shots.
There will be:
• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Pro bowlers showing off zany trick shots.
• 10:15 a.m. — Friars from St. Anthony Dining Room bowling in their robes in exhibition game competition.
• Automated scoring system with animated turkey characters and raffle prizes.
• Bowling coaches available that day to help everyone improve their bowling techniques.
Serra Bowl’s Charity Turkey Bowl XI “Strike Out Hunger” event is open to all. The event is free, but an optional cash or canned food donation is appreciated.
