The Baker women and St. Ambrose men put together strong performances to start the final month of the 2022-2023 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate regular season, collecting bracket wins at the Kohawk Invite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The event featured 17 women’s varsity teams and 19 men’s programs in the varsity division. Qualifying consisted of five traditional games and 16 Baker games. The top four teams in each division advanced to a bracket featuring a best-of-three Baker format to determine the champion.
Mount Mercy easily claimed the top spot in qualifying for the women’s division, finishing with an 8,401 total. William Penn was second with 8,021, and Baker was third with 7,967. Judson (7,894) edged St. Ambrose (7,861) for the final spot in the top four for the bracket.
In the opening round of the bracket, Mount Mercy recorded a 2-1 win over Judson to advance to the finals, while Baker swept William Penn (2-0) to move to the championship.
Baker maintained its undefeated run in the finals, posting a sweep of Mount Mercy (2-0) to claim the title.
The top two individual performances in the women’s division belonged to student-athletes from Mount Mercy. Megan Kolberg took home her third individual win of the season, rolling games of 218, 222, 248, 268 and 213 to finish with a five-game score of 1,169 (233.8 average), while Brynna Madison was the runner-up with 1,106.
William Penn’s Caitlin Radliff (1,103), Baker’s Emily Stamper (1,081) and Gabriella Evans of William Penn (1,045) also finished in the top five.
In the men’s division, Mount Mercy (8,782) finished just ahead of St. Ambrose (8,778) to earn the top seed for the bracket. Judson was third with 8,218, while Baker (7,864) stayed ahead of Avila (7,823) and Grand View (7,817) for the fourth spot.
Baker delivered a 2-1 win in the opening round of the men’s bracket to upset Mount Mercy, and St. Ambrose eliminated Judson (2-0) to advance to the title match.
In the finals, St. Ambrose went 2-0 against Baker to hoist the title.
The top five in the men’s individual standings featured three student-athletes from Mount Mercy and two from St. Ambrose.
Mount Mercy’s Brandon Bohn added a second individual win to his impressive rookie campaign, firing games of 205, 256, 300, 221 and 221 to claim the top spot in the standings with a 1,203 total (240.6 average).
Mount Mercy’s Brett Lloyd was second with 1,144, and St. Ambrose’s Cameron Crowe was third with 1,141. Mount Mercy’s Kyle Rosenberg (1,104) and St. Ambrose’s Corey Roth (1,087) rounded out the top five at the Kohawk Invite.
In other collegiate action:
-At the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) – Event 2 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, the Saint Vincent women finished 35 pins ahead of Medaille to claim the top spot.
-At the Muskie Mash in Coshocton, Ohio, Muskingum swept the top spots in the men’s and women’s division.
-At the Griffin Baker Classic in New Castle, Delaware, the Mercyhurst women swept Delaware State in the title match, 4-0.
-At the McKendree Baker Challenge in Fairview Heights, Illinois, the Midland men recorded a 2-1 win over Newman in the finals to take home the top prize. On the women’s side, McKendree claimed the home victory with a 2-0 sweep of Webber International.
-At the Great Lakes Bowling Conference (GLBC) – Event 4 in Milwaukee, the Wisconsin-Whitewater women and men swept the titles in the best-of-five championship rounds.
-At the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) – Event 2 in D’Iberville, Mississippi, the Alabama State women led the event in total pinfall.
-At the Big 10 Conference Championship in Allen Park, Michigan, Purdue captured back-to-back wins in the best-of-seven finals over Rutgers to claim the men’s title. In the women’s division, Indianapolis posted the bracket win over Michigan State.
-At the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) – Event 4 in Toledo, Ohio, Lourdes won the women’s title by more than 200 pins. Indiana Tech snuck past Lawrence Tech by 11 pins and Concordia by 17 pins to collect the win in the men’s division.
-At the Tony Reyes Memorial in San Jose, California, the Fresno State men pulled away from the field to record the win on the strength of their performance in Baker competition.
-At the Boulevard Classic in Schenectady, New York, the Rochester Institute of Technology women and William Paterson men finished at the top of the leaderboard.
-At the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference (SWIBC) Championships in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Christian men and women worked their way through the bracket to win the conference title.
-At the Crossroads League Bowling (CLB) – Event 4 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Spring Arbor women and Marian-Indiana men finished at the top of the standings for the second consecutive weekend.
-At the Seminole Classic 1 and 2 in Tallahassee, Florida, the Central Florida men recorded narrow wins over Emmanuel at each event (six pins and 24 pins, respectively). In the women’s division, Spring Hill collected the weekend sweep.
-At the SUNY Schenectady Invitational in Schenectady, New York, the SUNY-Stony Brook men recorded the win by more than 225 pins.
-At the American Heartland Bowling Association (AHBA) Conference Championship in Monroe, Michigan, the Adrian men posted a 48-pin win over Trine. In the women’s division, Trine recorded a 208-pin win to claim the conference title.
Collegiate bowling will be featured live on BowlTV this weekend in Dallas at the Lady Techster Classic. The event is taking place at USA Bowl and will be Feb. 10-12.
