MonacelliInsideLAS VEGAS –
Sammy Ventura of Syracuse, N.Y., retained his lead after the third round of the Etonic PBA Senior U.S. Open Wednesday at the Suncoast Bowling Center, but making a charge were two two-time winners hoping to become the tournament’s first three-time winner.

Ventura, who tied for the lead with Joe Salvemini of Las Vegas after the second round, leads with a 4,295 18-game pinfall total (238.1 average) and heads a field of 55 players who advanced to Thursday’s final qualifying round which will determine the top 24 players who will move on to match play. Salvemini dropped to eighth.

“I feel good physically and mentally and I have confidence in my equipment so I just need to keep an open mind about making adjustments,” Ventura said. “The one good thing about bowling on three different (lane) conditions over the past three days is getting the experience to adapt to the conditions and how the lanes play differently.”

Trailing Ventura are two two-time Senior U.S. Open champions, PBA Hall of Famers Wayne Webb and Tom Baker.

Webb, the 2010 Senior Player of the Year and the tournament’s champion in 2008 and 2009, is in second 24 pins back with 4,271. He bowled games of 227, 238, 268, 227, 248 and 255 in Wednesday’s round.

“It’s one of those rare tournaments where I’m actually feeling stronger as it goes along,” said Webb, who won 20 titles on the PBA Tour. “Early on I had trouble with my timing and made an adjustment holding the ball farther down in my stance like the old days and things just got better the more games I bowled.”

Baker, a four-time Senior Player of the Year who won the Senior U.S. Open in 2005 and 2006, is in third 41 pins back with 4,230. His third round included games of 199, 243, 224, 300, 199 and 241.

“I’m just plugging along,” Baker said. “The important thing right now is to not get ahead of yourself. You’re bowling on a different lane condition each day and then the pairs (of lanes) can be so different so you really have to stay in the moment.”

Another Hall of Famer, Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, bowling in his first year on the Senior Tour, charged from 15th after the second round to fourth finishing with 4,228. He had third round games of 246, 237, 249, 227, 279 and 247.

MohrRonInsideIt was a tough and unexpected tournament for reigning Senior Player of the Year and 2011 winner Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, failing to make the cut finishing 83rd.

“I’m disappointed and frankly a little embarrassed,” said Mohr, who also finished second in 2010. “In general it was just bad bowling but looking back on it I think I was throwing the ball too hard and couldn’t get a consistent ball reaction for an entire block.

“It shakes your confidence a little when everyone else around you is striking and then you have to press and chase strikes.”

The top 24 players after Thursday’s qualifying round will advance to round-robin match play to be conducted Thursday afternoon and Friday to determine the top four for the stepladder finals scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m. PT.
