ShaferRegionalInsideStratford, N.J. –
Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., defeated amateur Robert Smith of Voorhees, N.J., 182-173, to win the Professional Bowlers Association East Region Mil-Ray Foods Open at 30 Strikes Sunday.

Shafer, who was the qualifying leader, earned his 19th career regional title with a successful defense of the title he won in August of 2011. Shafer won the event while sitting on the bench after failing to double in the 10th frame to clinch the title. Smith, bowling in his first PBA Regional event, then had a chance to win. Needing to double in his 10th frame, Smith failed to throw the first strike.

Shafer earned $2,500 for the win while Smith collected $1,275 as the runner-up.

In the semifinal round, Shafer defeated John Conroy, Mahopac, N.Y. 240-226 and Smith defeated Charles Anderson, Sloatsburg, N.Y. 227-133. Conroy and Anderson earned $775 each.

The next PBA East Region event is the Strike Zone Senior Open in Pottsville, Pa., over the Labor Day weekend.
