About Bowler's Ed
The Bowler’s Ed In-School Bowling program is operated by the International Bowling Campus Youth Development Team. We are supported by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) and the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA).
Bowler’s Ed is a curriculum- and equipment-based physical education program designed to introduce students to the lifetime sport of bowling through an easy-to-follow, fun- and fitness-oriented lesson plan.
The FREE Bowler’s Ed curriculum adheres to common core educational standards, includes cross-curriculum activities for grades K-8 and offers a lifetime activity for students!
The Bowler’s Ed program accommodates students irrespective of gender, physical or natural ability. Children acquire skills toward the lifelong sport of bowling that builds strong bones, burns calories, promotes balance and coordination and develops sportsmanship. Teachers can have 5-6 students actively participating in the Bowler’s Ed activity at a time, so engaging the entire class is not an issue. The Bowler’s Ed curriculum has “activity stations” inserted into bowling activities to increase cross curriculum opportunities engaging the entire class in busy healthy, safe and educational activities.
The original in-school bowling initiative began in the 1980s as a Young America Bowling Alliance (YABA) program. In the late 1990s, the Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA) assumed responsibility for the YABA In-School Bowling program, making youth development a high priority.
In early 2000, the Bowler’s Ed program saw significant changes to the curriculum and in-school bowling equipment. The Bowler’s Ed program updated the curriculum with teacher-friendly lesson plans, fitness and fun activities and grading rubrics. Most notably the curriculum aligned the lessons and activities around the National Association of Sport and Physical Education standards.
The equipment was upgraded to highlight the specific aspects of a bowling lane such as the foul line, locator dots and targeting arrows. It was during this time the Bowler’s Ed program with the support of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) began seeing success by creating a FREE program available to teachers without a financial commitment.
In 2015 through the combined effort of the BPAA and USBC an adaptive needs section was added establishing opportunities for kids of all ages, sizes and abilities the opportunity to have fun, socialize and learn the lifelong sport of bowling. In addition, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) section was created to meet the growing needs of STEM instruction in elementary education. In a simple game of bowling, we can witness all types of situations that deal with motion, speed, velocity, acceleration, forces and more!
What we do
We work with schools, bowling centers, associations, and other organizations to deliver bowling curriculum's and enhance their teaching systems by incorporating easy to use bowling equipment. The entire bowling industry supports the Bowler’s Ed initiative. As the National Governing Body for the sport as well as the largest organization servicing youth bowling, we are charged with the responsibility of introducing bowling to kids through physical education.
We help bring bowling centers and associations together with schools in their community so that those partnerships can ensure bowling is a top choice for physical educators.
Our objective is to promote a lifelong enjoyment of bowling by fostering youth and community health and fitness programs, maintaining the value of sportsmanship, character development, and leadership skills, while providing research, education and training for the bowling community and its athletes.
