Texas pair take Topaz lead at 2019 USBC Women's Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - What started as a road trip for a family reunion for Ronda Conley of Mullin, Texas, and Norma Tucker of Cross Plains, Texas, turned into a trip to the top of the standings Friday at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.
The pair took over the lead in Topaz Doubles at Northrock Lanes, rolling to a 907 combined total to surpass the 874 score posted by Teah Colvin of Riverton, Nebraska, and Mary Sawyer of Burr Oak, Kansas.
Conley led the effort with games of 150, 201 and 135 for a 486 series, and Tucker added 135, 150 and 136 for a 421 series.
Conley was planning on attending her husband's family reunion in Missouri this month, but she also thought it would be fun to stop in Wichita along the way to bowl at the 100th edition of the USBC Women's Championships.
She invited Tucker to come along on the journey.
"My husband's family reunion was our reason for being here this year," said Conley, who made her second tournament appearance.
Conley and Tucker bowl league together with their husbands back in Texas, but they were excited to share in this accomplishment.
"It's kind of funny," said Tucker, who made her fourth Women's Championships appearance. "Back home, we bowl mixed doubles with our husbands, yet we achieved this without them even being on the lanes with us."
The duo enjoyed being able to take the lead, although they admitted to being surprised by their performance. Now, they have a short wait to see if they can add a gemstone trophy to carry along back to Texas.
The 2019 Women's Championships concludes June 30.
"This has been both fun and surprising," Tucker said. "It was just an accident."
Topaz Doubles features bowlers with combined entering averages of 259 and below.
