2021 USBC Women's Championships moving to Reno, 2022 event heading to Chicagoland area

ARLINGTON, Texas - The 2021 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships now will be hosted by the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada.
The 2021 event previously was scheduled to take place at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois, while the 2022 tournament was slated for Reno and the NBS.
Agreements between USBC and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA), DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau (DCVB) and Stardust Bowl allow for swapping of host centers and gives USBC the opportunity to have additional schedule flexibility in conducting the 2021 event with the current uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a tournament-only venue, the National Bowling Stadium has the capacity to handle an extension of tournament dates if public health concerns with COVID-19 continue into 2021.
"We appreciate our partners at the RSCVA, DCVB and Stardust Bowl working together to make this switch possible for the 2021 and 2022 Women's Championships," USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. "Without knowing what the future holds with COVID-19, bringing the 2021 event to the National Bowling Stadium gives us the best opportunity to run the tournament in a safe manner for our bowlers and staff, without causing any additional challenges for Stardust Bowl in running its leagues, tournaments and day-to-day business.
"Returning to the Midwest has been a priority for us, though, so we're excited to be able to bring the tradition and history of the Women's Championships to Stardust Bowl and DuPage County in 2022."
Reno and the National Bowling Stadium share a long history with the Women's Championships, with the 2021 event marking the tournament's 12th visit to the city and ninth appearance at the famed and newly remodeled venue.
The 2020 USBC Open Championships originally was scheduled to be held in Reno's 78-lane facility prior to being canceled in July due to the pandemic.
The NBS had undergone a $4.5 million renovation leading up to the 2020 Open Championships, including the removal of stadium seating, an expanded settee area and new furnishings across the fourth floor of the venue.
"The entire Reno-Tahoe community is honored to welcome the USBC Women's Championships back to the National Bowling Stadium for the first major tournament at the NBS since its recent $4.5 million transformation," RSCVA Interim President and CEO Jennifer Cunningham said. "It feels very symbolic that the ladies will be the first to bowl at the all-new facility. I think we're all excited for a fresh start."
The DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau worked with Stardust Bowl to submit a Request for Proposal (RFP) to host the Women's Championships and was selected by USBC in 2017 to host the event in 2021.
The Women's Championships will be making its first visit to the Chicagoland area in more than 85 years. Chicago hosted the tournament in 1920 and 1935.
"DuPage County has enjoyed a long legacy of hosting championship tournaments, and we are delighted to welcome the USBC Women's Championships in 2022," DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Beth Marchetti said. "With only a handful of large venues in the United States able to accommodate a national event of this size, Stardust Bowl in the Village of Addison stands ready to welcome nearly 30,000 guests. Discover DuPage and the DuPage Sports Commission have been planning this event for years, and we will be ready to invite the bowlers and their families to visit our charming communities."
Stardust Bowl is the largest bowling center in Illinois, featuring 84 lanes. It has hosted several national events, including the 2016 U.S. Women's Open and 2015 Junior Gold Championships. The center also has hosted the Intercollegiate Team Championships and Intercollegiate Singles Championships sectional events many times.
"Although we were eagerly awaiting the chance to host the USBC Women's Championships in 2021, we will be even more excited to welcome the tournament to Stardust Bowl in 2022," Stardust Bowl owner Henry Barber said. "We are looking forward to working with USBC and DuPage County to create an unforgettable tournament experience for each and every bowler."
The starting date for the 2021 Women's Championships will change from April 18 to April 23. The final doubles and singles squad still is scheduled for July 4. The USBC will also be adjusting squad start times to improve the experience.
To make these changes, online access to register or adjust a team for the 2021 Women's Championships will be suspended until Nov. 6, 2020 at 9 a.m. Eastern.
Teams scheduled to bowl in the 2021 tournament will not have to take any additional steps to ensure their reservations, as all dates, starting on April 23, remain the same.
Captains of teams currently scheduled to bowl during the April 18-22 time frame can reschedule their dates by managing their reservation online after Nov. 6, 2020 at 9 a.m. Eastern or by sending their request to usbcwomenschampionships@bowl.com.
Teams that wish to request a refund or roll their funds to 2022 can do so by emailing a request to usbcwomenschampionships@bowl.com.
The squad times and capacities for the 2021 Women's Championships currently are structured to accommodate for social distancing, including reducing the number of teams competing per squad and having only one team per pair of lanes.
The USBC Queens will remain connected to the Women's Championships in 2021 and also will make the move to the NBS in Reno. The Queens will be held May 12-18. Registration for the Queens will open Jan. 13.
The USBC Convention and Annual Meeting will remain in Lombard, Illinois, in 2021. The event is scheduled to be held at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center from April 26-29.
