Collegiate Ticker - Sept. 22, 2021

The 2021-2022 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season got underway last weekend, with the Madonna women and Bowling Green State men starting the year with wins at the RU Warrior Fall Classic in Troy, Michigan.

The event featured nine women's varsity teams and 10 men's varsity programs. Teams bowled four traditional games and 16 Baker games, with total pinfall determining the winner in each division.

In the women's division, Madonna held a 26-pin lead over Concordia after the traditional block but put together a 315-pin victory based on the strength of its Baker block, rolling to the top spot with a 6,537 total.

Concordia held on to second place with 6,222, while Spring Arbor moved up two spots during Baker competition to take third with 6,193.

Madonna's Emily Gurin was the only student-athlete in the women's field to average more than 200 during the four-game traditional block, posting an 835 total (208.75 average) to earn top individual honors.

Gurin was followed in the individual standings by Concordia's Shannon Geiger (772), Spring Arbor's Montana Hernandez (765), Concordia's Isabell Cooley (759) and Rochester's Sarah Lyerla (729).

Bowling Green State ascended to the top of the men's standings during its Baker block, making up a 90-pin deficit to Aquinas after four traditional games. The Falcons averaged more than 194 during Baker competition to claim the top spot with a 6,977 total.

Concordia charged into second place with 6,949, and Aquinas finished in third with 6,815.

In the men's individual standings, Michigan-Dearborn's Stephen Strzalkowski rolled 246 in his final game to edge the field for the top spot with an 865 total, a 216.3 average.

The next four competitors in the standings finished within 15 pins of Strzalkowski, with Cornerstone's Nicholas Slagter (857), Spring Arbor's Shane Hill (854), Bowling Green State's Derek May (853) and Rochester's Brian Shimabukuro (850) finishing in the top five.
