Maynard Johnson of Crystal, Minn., and Dale Diamond of Chatham, Ill., each reached participation milestones at the USBC Open Championships this past week in Reno.

Johnson, an 82-year-old right-hander, became the 17th bowler in 110 years of USBC Open Championships history to participate 60 times, while Diamond, a 71-year-old right-hander, added his name to the list of competitors who have eclipsed the 50-year mark.

Johnson’s tournament career started at the 1951 ABC Tournament in St. Paul, Minn., and now that he has reached one plateau, he’s already focused on another elite group: the 100,000-Pin Club.

“That’s what I’d like to do next,” said Johnson, who has knocked down 98,753 pins, including 1561 this year, for a 184 career average at the tournament. “I don’t get many each year, but I did better than last year.”

Diamond made his ceremonial march down center aisle on Sunday, becoming the 158th bowler in history, and third of nine this year, to compete in 50 Open Championships. He shot 515 in doubles, 508 in singles and 506 in team for a 1529 all-events total. He has knocked down 83,269 pins in his career for a 185 average.

Johnson received a plaque, chevron and engraved money clip to commemorate the milestone, while Diamond received a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin.
