2012 TAE champion won't repeat at OC
April 19, 2013
RENO, Nev. - S&B Pro Shop 1 of Clinton Township, Mich., moved into fourth place in Regular Team at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Thursday and hoped to use that momentum to become the first team since 1998 to claim back-to-back Team All-Events titles.
Unfortunately, an injury to a member of the team during doubles at the National Bowling Stadium on Friday essentially ended the team's chances of repeating. Their pinfall total for the 2013 event was 8,853. Junior Team USA Support 1 of Mansfield, Texas, leads Team All-Events this year with 10,247.
Mark Moore, the team's lone left-hander, led the effort with a 2,024 all-events total and was followed by Kerry Kreft (1,947), Dave Ewald (1,892), Bill Orlikowski (1,854) and Nick Wissinger, who withdrew during his third game of doubles with a pulled bicep (1,136).
"We bowled pretty well in the team event, but I'm a little disappointed in myself because I feel like there was more out there for me than what I got," said Wissinger, who made his 25th USBC Open Championships appearance. "The overall experience of coming in as the defending champions was awesome, though. I don't know what else to say. It's something everyone dreams of. I am fortunate to bowl with the guys I bowl with."
After being introduced as the 2012 Team All-Events winners and receiving their championship watches at Center Aisle, the group quickly turned its focus to the lanes and shot 3,439 in team. Although doubles and singles didn't go as well, Moore ended his 21st Open Championships on a high note, moving into seventh place in Regular Singles with 747.
Moore stepped up in his final frame needing two strikes and good count to take the singles lead but got slow and left a 4-6-10 split on his first shot. Kelly Bonta of Wichita, Kan., leads with 776.
"All day, I was just trying to focus on staying slow, but I got that shot in a little bit and paid the price," said Moore, whose previous-best singles series was 723 at the 2002 tournament in Billings, Mont.
Last year's win almost didn't happen for Moore, who bowled the 2012 event in Baton Rouge, La., with an injured wrist that required surgery last July. His teammates wouldn't let him find a substitute, and that decision led him to his second title at the Open Championships.
Nick Wissinger led the way for S&B Pro Shop 1 last year with a 2,152 all-events effort, which was fourth overall. He was followed by Ewald (2,049), Orlikowski (2,038), Kreft (1,900) and Moore (1,815) for a 9,954 team total.
Ewald, Kreft and Moore claimed the 2004 Regular Team title with S&B Pro Shop 2's Fred Bauss and Joe Krajenke, while Orlikowski and Kreft, along with companion team member Jay Lang, were Team All-Events champions in 1999.
Even though it had been a few years since they had to put their titles on the line, Moore said there wasn't any added pressure, and their routine didn't change.
"I don't think anyone felt any extra pressure, but if they did, we didn't talk about it at all," Moore said. "We also didn't do anything different. Everyone practiced like they normally would, although I didn't practice as much because of my wrist, and we bowled at the Bowlers Journal like we usually do."
Overall, Moore enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate last year's win with his teammates and the other bowlers on their team squad, even if their 2013 campaign didn't end as well.
"I really enjoyed the presentation, and it was nice to take all of that in," Moore said. "In the end, we come in, we bowl and we try to win every year. Sure, we're a little disappointed that we weren't able to take the lead in anything this time, but we'll be back again next year to take another crack at it."
Lodge Lanes of Belleville, Mich., took home the Team All-Events titles in 1997 and 1998, and would've had three consecutive wins if Orlikowski and Kreft's Ottman Enterprises team didn't edge them out by a single pin for the win in 1999.
That Lodge Lanes team included three-time champion John Gaines, who recently helped Lodge Lanes Too of Orlando, Fla., into the Regular Team lead with a record score of 3,538. Gaines and his current teammates topped the 20-year-old record set by Bruegger's Bagels of Albany, N.Y., which shot 3,537 at the 1993 event in Tulsa, Okla.
