Amateur Jerry Brunette Tops Qualifying In PBA50 Pasco County Florida Open

Amateur Jerry Brunette Jr. of Rochester, N.Y., averaged 233.6 to take top qualifier honors Monday in the PBA50 Pasco County Florida Open at Lane Glo Bowl heading into Tuesday’s match play rounds.
Brunette completed qualifying in the opening tournament of the season with a 3,738 16-game pinfall total bowling 1,890 in Monday’s eight-game second round with games of 203, 199, 236, 217, 258, 247, 264 and 266. He edged out reigning PBA50 Player of the Year Hall of Famer Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., for the lead by two pins.
“I’m living the dream,” said Brunette, who is primarily a local tournament bowler in western and northern New York and is competing in his first PBA tournament of any kind. “I’ve been dreaming about and working to compete at this level for more than 30 years and now here I am.”
Brunette, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, made an adjustment in the middle of Monday’s round to make his run at the tournament lead.
“I didn’t have a good feel at the start of the fourth game so I made some adjustments and a ball change and put it all together at that point. Generally, I feel like I’m getting stronger as the tournament goes on so I’m looking forward to match play.”
The top 24 players advanced to Tuesday’s match play rounds and 22 players (positions 25-38 plus eight PBA60 players) advanced to Tuesday morning’s five-game cashers round that will determine eight additional match play spots. After match play, the top five players will advance to the stepladder finals at 7 p.m. ET.
Rounding out the top five after Monday’s second round were Duke with 3,736; Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., 3,710; Joe Scarborough, Charlotte, N.C., 3,677 and Brian LeClair, Albany, N.Y., 3,660. Sunday’s first round leader and defending champion Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela finished qualifying in seventh with 3,621.
