Americans off to strong start in singles at IBF World Youth Championships in Malaysia

ARLINGTON, Texas – Three Junior Team USA athletes advanced to match play while two others put themselves in position to do so during Sunday’s opening rounds of singles competition at the 2026 International Bowling Federation World Youth Championships, which is taking place at Megalanes Sarawak Bowling Centre in Sarawak, Malaysia, through July 6.
Jacob Bockstie of Nottingham, Maryland; Josh Hammons of Topeka, Kansas; and Landin Jordan of Sycamore, Illinois, all finished inside the top 16 in the 133-player Boys’ Singles field to punch their tickets to match play.
Bockstie led the way for the American contingent, using games of 265, 265, 214, 190, 246 and 177 to place seventh on Day 1 with a six-game score of 1,357 (a 226.2 average).
Jordan finished ninth with 1,339, which he arrived at thanks to scores of 204, 258, 207, 247, 216 and 207, while Hammons ended the opening round in 11th place at 1,332 (215, 230 221, 247, 194 and 225).
Korea’s Kang Dahoon led the Boys’ Singles qualifying field on Sunday with a six-game tally of 1,435 (a 239.2 average).
Sweden’s Noel Torgersen Haglund was second with 1,396. Ben Pettit of New Zealand rounded out the top three at 1,381.
Junior Team USA’s Dawson Peterson of Stewartville, Minnesota, missed the Boys’ Singles match-play cut, finishing in 40th place with a six-game total of 1,267 (213, 226, 227, 192, 237 and 172).
Only half of the Girls’ Singles field competed on Sunday, but both American ladies to hit the lanes fared well with Gianna Brandolino of Channahon, Illinois, placing fourth and Erin Klemencic of Powder Springs, Georgia, landing in fifth.
Brandolino rolled games of 209, 220, 166, 226, 204 and 201 to come in with 1,226 (a 204.3 average) while Klemencic was four pins back at 1,222 (200, 184, 225, 203, 176 and 234).
Malaysia’s Qurratu’ain Izdihar Mohd Pozi authored the highest score among the 43 athletes who competed in Girls’ Singles action on Sunday, posting a six-game mark of 1,290 (a 215 average).
Singapore’s Hazel Tan Wei Ning was second at 1,256, and Samanthan Clifton of Australia was third with 1,232.
The competitors on Squad 2 will roll their six-game qualifying blocks on Monday, after which the Girls’ Singles field will be cut to the top 16 athletes who will advance to match play.
Junior Team USA will have two ladies participating during Squad 2, Katelyn Abigania of San Diego and Elizabeth Teuber of Holly, Michigan.
The final Girls’ Singles qualifying block won’t be the only action at Megalanes on Monday, however, as singles match play will commence thereafter and pare both fields down to just four competitors by day’s end.
Attention will then shift to the doubles events with the first two rounds in each division being completed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Team qualifying and match play will take place on Thursday and Friday with the first two rounds of mixed team action immediately following on Saturday.
Singles semifinal- and final-round action will headline the schedule on July 5 along with the doubles semifinals in both divisions.
The final day of competition will be the most extensive, however, as July 6’s docket will feature the doubles finals and the semifinals and finals for both the team and mixed team events.
Once the final shots have been delivered and the final medals conferred, the Victory Banquet will officially bring the 2026 IBF World Youth Championships to a close on the evening of July 6.
