Auerbach and Baker Top PBA50 Pasco County Florida Open First Round

Baker.Tom_KingNC_2015WSOB(2)Craig Auerbach of Sunrise, Fla., got the 2016 PBA50 Tour season started by averaging 245 to lead first round qualifying Sunday in the season opening Pasco County Florida Open at Lane Glo Bowl.

The 52-year-old Auerbach, bowling in his fourth PBA50 Tour tournament, bowled a very consistent round with a 1,961 eight-game pinfall total on games of 242, 247, 245, 268, 235, 254, 245 and 225.

“My ball reaction was strong all day long and it was just one of those rounds where there were no dramatic changes from lane to lane,” Auerbach said. “Everything was real consistent. I used the same ball the entire round and didn’t miss any spares so I was able to avoid a roller coaster round where you have a good game one game and a bad one the next.”

Auerbach holds a four-pin lead over four-time PBA50 Player of the Year Tom Baker of King, N.C., who finished with a 1,957 pinfall. Baker had games of 244, 193, 280, 224, 256, 234, 279 and 247.

The 61-year-old Hall of Famer will be trying for his 13th PBA50 Tour title which would put him second all alone on the all-time titles list behind John Handegard with 14 wins.

Rounding out the top five were Brian LeClair, Delmar, N.Y. and John Donovan, Melbourne, Fla., tied with 1,904, and Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Twp., Mich. and John Dougherty of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., tied with 1,891.

Defending champion Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., finished the round in ninth with 1,874.

The entire 152-player field returns Monday for the second eight-game qualifying round. The field will be cut to 32 players for Tuesday’s match play rounds which will determine the top five players for the stepladder finals scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

Fans can catch all the PBA50 Tour action throughout the season on Xtra Frame and have their choice of three subscription options -- three days for $3.99; a 30-day package for $7.99, and a 12-month Xtra Frame Season Ticket for $64.99. To enroll, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link.
