If you read this week's entry-level tip, you might think I'm contradicting myself by what I have to say next: Ball speed is good, but it's not everything!

All too often, once an entry-level bowler learns to hit the pins regularly, he or she then begins trying to hit them while throwing the ball as hard as possible. I know what you're thinking: "C'mon, coach; more speed equals more pin action, which equals a higher score, right?" That's true to a point, but once you've got the basics down, it's more important to find the right speed rather than just using the fastest speed you can muster.

So, at this point, it's time for you to figure out the right speed for your game. Basically, that means finding the fastest speed that allows you to stay in control and hit the head pin the majority of the time.

Once you master that balance of speed and accuracy, you will be better able to repeat shots and knock down large numbers of pins. So, remember, as you progress, it's not just about how hard you hit the pins; it's about striking the proper balance between speed and control.
